An estimated 7% of breast cancers, 10% of ovarian cancers and 5% percent of colorectal cancers are caused by mutations in genetic information that are passed from generation to generation.

What is genetic testing?

A sophisticated blood test gives patients the knowledge they need to make appropriate screening, prevention and lifestyle management decisions.

Who should consider genetic testing?

People with high breast and ovarian cancer risk factors including a family history of the following:

  • premenopausal breast cancer
  • ovarian cancer at any age
  • male breast cancer
  • both breast and ovarian cancer
  • bilateral breast cancer
  • Ethnic background (Ashkenazi Jewish)

Colorectal and Endometrial Cancer risk factors include a personal or family history including:

  • colorectal cancer or endometrial cancer diagnosed before age 50
  • one individual with multiple cancers associated with HNPCC
  • Two immediate relatives with colon or endometrial cancers diagnosed before age 50

What actions would I take if the genetics test showed some of the gene mutations increasing my risk for these certain types of cancers?

  • You would know whether you should be screened at a younger age and with greater frequency
  • Certain drugs or preventative surgery may be considered
  • Treatment plans for cancer patients may be modified
What is the next step?

Call 404.501.EASY to discuss the Cancer Genetics Risk Assessment survey. This assessment helps identify individuals who are at higher risk for certain types of hereditary cancers. If the patient’s history and risk assessment results indicate and increased risk based upon hereditary factors, we can draw the blood sample needed for the actual genetics laboratory study and help with any insurance pre-certification and filing requirements.
